For the past 250 years, the history of exploitation, slaughter, and enslavement of the Woppaburra people mirrors that of their clan totem, Mugga mugga, otherwise known as the humpback whale.
Despite the violent slavery and whaling, the inexplicably tied parties also have experienced a recent surge in protection with the civil rights and environmental protection movements.
Now, the humpback whale numbers are no longer near the brink of extinction. Similarly, the Woppaburra people have returned to their homelands and are reforming their cultural inheritance.
In combining the world’s oldest culture with today’s technology, Mugga Mugga VR will be made in collaboration with leading indigenous creatives and the Woppaburra community. We will create a thought-provoking immersive and experimental documentary, using the oral and documented history of four generations of Woppaburra and Mugga Mugga family lineage.
