Sahab Imaginary Museum: Strengthening the Community to Build the Museum by the Hawaf Collective

Join the next NewImages Hub workshop led by the Hawaf Collective on Thursday, December 12th, 2024, from 9 AM to 1 PM at Forum des images in Paris.

The workshop will focus on collaborative work techniques through the artistic experiences and creations of the Hawaf Collective. Each step of the creative process will be detailed, from the initial concept to the development of a fully immersive experience.

The Hawaf Collective

The Hawaf Collective is a multidisciplinary group founded by artists, architects, developers, and thinkers from Gaza and France. Since 2021, they have been meeting both remotely and in person around the idea of strengthening a community to build a museum in Gaza – the Sahab Imaginary Museum.

Hawaf understands collective imagination as a tool for creation and empowerment, providing visibility for artists from Gaza and helping them break free from isolation. It is also a way to preserve the past, rethink the present, and look toward the future. Sahab Museum presents a series of virtual spaces and platforms dedicated to exploring ideas and art. It uses virtual reality technologies to allow visitors from Palestine and around the world to explore it, regardless of their location.

The Workshop

How do you work as a collective? How do you harmonize and streamline communication in an international context where participants don’t reside in the same country? How do you create collectively?

The workshop will be divided into two parts. The first one consists of a presentation of the main creative and digital projects of the Hawaf Collective. The second one focuses on a collective practical exercise of an XR artwork using the Gravity Sketch application.

Part 1: How to Create Collectively on an International Scale ?

Hawaf has developed a specific methodology to create a collection of physical and digital artworks, which has taken various forms since its inception, including a website, workshops, and a traveling exhibition.

Participants will get an overview of the collective’s collaborative dynamics: from the initial design of an artistic project to its final exhibition, as well as how each phase of creation is enriched by the unique contributions of each member.

The collective will discuss the diverse constraints they encountered or that systematically arise during collaborative work.

They will share their collective creation experiences and their experiences working with international partners and collaborators (Palestine, France, Colombia).

Part 2: Practical Exercise – Create a Collective VR Artwork with Gravity Sketch

Participants will engage in the creation of a collective digital VR artwork, in groups of up to 4 people. Each group will be guided and supported by Hawaf members to use the Gravity Sketch application to create together.

Speakers:

The collective will be represented by Mohamed Bourouissa, Andres Burbano and Pauline Deschamps in person at the Forum des images, and online by Salman Nawati, Mohamed Abusal, Marion Slitine, and Sondos Alnakhala.
